What is the purpose of a balm for lips that always chap in the winter?

Winter is about three months. When spring comes, lips are healthy again. I think it is just a waste of money to buy a balm when lips naturally heal in the spring for most people. People use balm for beauty, NOT for health reasons. What is the purpose of a balm for lips that always chap in the winter?
The purpose is to have a waterproof shield to prevent the dry winter air from pulling moisture from your lips, reducing or preventing chapping.

If you like having dry, cracked, bleeding lips with dead skin hanging off them, dude no one is stopping you. You might re-think this attitude if you had someone to make out with, but something tells me you've never kissed a girl and probably never will. What is the purpose of a balm for lips that always chap in the winter?
Cracked lips are extremely painful, especially when you combine it with cold weather I would just prefer that i could talk and eat without constant niggling pain in my lips
I use balm year round so I have no idea what you mean... besides, balm really isn't that expensive, and do you want to walk around for 3 months with chapped, bleeding lips? That's incredibly unattractive.
It keeps your lips from drying out and getting chapped during harsh weather. Who wants to go all winter with chapped lips? It's very inexpensive and helpful; that's why people use it.
That is like saying why shower if you are just gonna go swimming in the summer.

Would you rather see someone with decent lips or someone with white flaky dead skin falling all over your desk?
When you go out and your lips are so chapped that they start to crack and split then what? Can your lips stand up to strong winds and cold? That's what Chapstick is for. To protect your lips from cracking and splitting which is very painful.

Lip gloss is used for beauty, but Chapstick is all about protecting your lips and keeping them healthy.
